The action takes place
roughly 500 light years from Earth in the Helio system around the Earth year
1300 A.D. At the heart of this system is the star Helios. Orbiting about
this star are 6 planets.
The fourth planet Magus has 6 planet
sized moons orbiting it. They are named Nibe, Hume, Myria, Gorax, Zho, and
Lacuna. Of these moons, 2 are terrestrial, Gorax and Lacuna. It is on
Lacuna that our story takes place and it is home to five races of sapient
beings. The native Khoblens, the three migrant races: Nibelings, Humens,
and Myrians, and the colonial Goraxians.
However, it was not always as such.
The history of how this all came to be, began 500 years ago and is a story
of struggle and survival.

The history of our tale has a complex
beginning with several threads of history all culminating on the moon of
Lacuna. These threads came together roughly 500 years prior to the story’s
beginning and each thread represents the history of a moon and it’s
people.
The most significant
of the early peoples are the Myrians as they are the most advanced of all
of the races. For hundreds of years prior to The Great Migration the
Myrians, mostly the priMyrians in particular, traveled the Orbital Lay
Lines of Magus. These lines allowed portals to be opened between Myria and
the other moons orbiting Magus. During these years of travel the
priMyrians, the most advanced of the Myrian Breeds, made contact with many of
the cultures of the different moons and began open policies of trade with
the inhabitants. They exchanged goods primarily, but also ideas, technology,
and secrets of mystical arts.
The first people that the Myrians
came into contact where on the moon of Nibe. These people would become
know as Nibelings and they would be prized for their magnificent
craftsmanship and scientific advancements.
The second group that the Myrians
came to know where the people of Hume. The inhabitants of this moon where
exceptionally culturally diverse. The Humens and Myrians established a
strong bond and were the only aliens ever permitted to set foot on Myria.
From early on it was apparent that
different races had different aptitudes for mystical abilities. The
Myrians were most adept at magic, the Humens were by far the best
Seers (psionisists) and the Nibelings excelled in making items that utilized
mystical energies. All of these specialized talents would work, as if by fate,
to push these people together onto one world where they would be forced to
live together or die trying.

The greatest Seer of Hume had a
horrific vision of the future. In one years time all life on Hume as well
as Myria and Nibe would be forever destroyed. A rouge planet that had been
captured by Helion’s gravity a millennia ago was to cross orbits with
Magus. When it did, it would be captured by Magus’ gravity and in the
process make Myria, Nibe and Hume unlivable.
A council of Humens,
Myrians, and Nibelings met and they hatched a plan to migrate both races
to another world that would be unaffected. Giant lay-portals would be
constructed in each land and they would open portals to a safe world that
the three races would migrate to.
They decided to go to
the moon of Lacuna. It was inhabited by the race of Khoblens. Most of these beings were still in the Stone Age so they would
pose little, if any, real resistance. The soil was rich and fertile, and
the climate varied but was mostly mild. This made Lacuna the perfect
candidate for colonization.
To draw enough mana to
make transit for everyone, they built The Oculon; a
device with the largest and most powerful focus ring ever conceived. The
time was nigh and the Oculon lit up and sent an intense
wave of energy directly into the heart of Magus and the Eye opened wide
for a brief moment. All of the lay-portals activated and just about everyone
made transit to their new home.
The plan worked and most of the
inhabitants of all three moons survived certain death. However, it would
remain to be seen if they were truly saved or if they had only delayed the
inevitable. An Ice Age was on the way, the Khoblens were not happy about
their new guests, and far too many people were forced to live on far too
little land.

Throughout the year leading up to the
Great Migration, priMyrian agents slipped into Khoblen villages at night and
infected the water supply with the Red Death. Entire villages were wiped
out and the Red Death spread like wild fire. Khoblen casualties went into
the millions. Areas were strategically opened for new colonization but not
quite as much as the priMyrians had planned. The Khoblens were not nearly as
susceptible to the Red Death as the priMyrians and the death toll was less
than half as much as suspected.
It should be noted that while the Khoblens
were very primitive, they were not stupid. Many of the tribes figured out
that the priMyrians had betrayed them and they began to mobilize their forces
to repel their new sworn enemy. It should also be noted that while the
Humens and Nibelings had no idea of the priMyrian betrayal, the Khoblens didn’t
know that.
When the waves of Humens and
Nibelings started to arrive both they and the Khoblens were taken by
surprise. The Khoblens hadn’t expected their arrival for another month and
the Humens and Nibelings didn’t expect the land to be occupied. The Humens
and Nibelings hadn’t planned to fight and the Khoblens hadn’t planned to let
them take their land. It was a one way trip after all. Had the Humens and
Nibelings even wanted to turn around they couldn’t and the language
barrier further compounded the situation. Things quickly broke down into
massive conflicts and the loss of life on all sides was massive. These
battles raged long into the Settlement Era but the war with the Khoblens
started on arrival day and didn’t end for over 200 years.

This is a polite euphemism of a
severely brutal and extensive period of time. This era lasted about 250
years and began shortly after The Great Migration. It was the aftershock
of over a hundred nations participating in a massive land grab. As one
would expect many people were envious of their neighbor’s acquisitions and
border disputes were abound.
While elements of this era existed
all across Lacuna it was most predominately seen among the Humen lands.
The Humens where by far the most diverse and abundant people to make the
transit. They came over as hundred different nations with at least 10
different major religions. Theses differences mixed with new and uncertain
borders, a constant aggressive enemy (Khoblens), and declining resources
(climate change due to ice age) pushed these societies beyond the point of
resolution. Hard decisions had to be made quickly on a daily basis and
were often done at the end of a sword. The Humens went through a social
distillation process that weeded out the weak and resulted in a few
exceptionally strong nations.
The Myrians had made sure to
establish their territories long before hand and their well planned brutal
arrival left no questions of their settlements. The settlement era had
little effect on the Myrian nations other than to make them more powerful
as their neighbors slaughtered one another whole sale.
When the Settlement Era came to a
close, border disputes and land acquisition had about come to an end. The
survivors of these times had no more stomach to fight over land and
resources except without first exhausting all forms of compromise
available. Furthermore, the Khoblens had taken such heavy losses and had
been pushed back so far into their own lands that they neither had the
numbers or the will to fight anymore. They had essentially been broken.

At the end of the Settlement Era, the
Khoblen lands had been reduced by at least a half of their former size.
Humens, in a desperate struggle for survival, had pushed the Khoblens back
in all directions. Entire tribal nations disappeared and those that were
left were decimated. Many tribes came together and many of age old
animosities were replaced with a hatred of a new enemies. The
backstabbing, ruthless Myrians, and the vicious, bloodthirsty Humens. Of
course, their allies, the Gherens would eventually have to go as well. They supplied
the other two with magnificent weapons and vessels that aided them in
their wars.
It was about 70 years after the
Settlement Era that the Khoblens were able to regroup, rebuild, and begin
their plan of counter attack. Most of what would be known as the Second
Khoblen War happened in the Eastern Khoblen Territory. These tribes began
to ally on a massive scale.
The second Khoblen War started in the
summer of 327. Five hundred thousand Khoblen warriors armed to the teeth
poured over their borders and raised hundreds of towns, killing and
pillaging every step of the way. By the time their enemies had been able
to mount an adequate defense, the Khoblens had pushed the Eastern
territory out 200 miles in all directions.
Fighting continued in many terrible
bloody battles but the Khoblen progression was finally stopped. However,
they managed to maintain their new borders to this day and have finally
established a stopping point for their enemies.

The War of Unification was a struggle
to bring together the tribes of Astor (a cotenant of Hume) to form a strong, powerful nation to
stand against the priMyrian nation of nuMyria and the emerging threat posed by
the modernized Khoblens to the north. While the Tribes of Astor were
powerful when they stood together, it was rare that they did. Continual
border and religious disputes kept them from ever forming any lasting
alliances.
On an early spring morning in 465
King Servan led his troupes into battle. Servan managed to conquer or annex
all the current lands of today's Astoria. He left all of the nobility in power and
did not encroach on their laws or religion. They only had to pledge
loyalty to Astoria, pay taxes for the common good of the nation, and
supply soldiers in the time of need. In this way he hoped to build a
strong nation that would stand against the priMyrian and Khoblen threat.
While there are those who still
harbor ill feelings about the war, the general consensus is that the
unification has improved life for everyone in the nation. The citizens
feel safer, economy has improved, and the relations between nuMyria and
Astoria have never been better.
